KINGDOM, COVENANTS AND CANON OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
INSTRUCTIONS FOR LESSON 1: WHY STUDY THE OLD TESTAMENT?


Preparation

Before starting the lesson, you should obtain the following resources: a) The lecture for this lesson, either in the form of video, audio file, or manuscript. See the link under "The Multimedia Lessons." b) The "Section Study Guides" for the course. Find them under "Downloadable Course Resources," also found in the section "Course Resources." You should download this document onto your computer, in order to use it for studying the lectures. 


The lesson is divided into the following sections:

1) The Old Testament’s Distance from Us
2) Relevance for Us 
3) Application to Us.


Goals and Objectives

GOALS

In this lesson, we would like to accomplish the following:

1. We hope you will make use of all the resources and activities of the lesson to understand why we should study the Old Testament, and to learn how to shorten the distance between the O.T. and us today, applying it and making it relevant.

2. We hope you will become excited about studying the Old Testament and become convinced of its importance for us today.

3. We hope you make some changes in your life as a response to the teachings of this lesson. It should help you interpret and apply the Old Testament properly, especially passages related to the law.

OBJECTIVES

When you have done the following, it will show that the goals are met:

1. Obtain satisfactory grades on the tests, demonstrating that you can identify the following: factors that produce a distance between us and the Old Testament, steps to shorten that distance, the meaning of biblical inspiration, the attitude of Jesus and Paul toward the Old Testament, and the proper application of the Old Testament today.

2. Answer the application questions in the study guides, expressing your attitude regarding the Old Testament, and showing how the teachings of the lesson help you interpret and apply the Old Testament, especially passages related to the law.

SECTION 1

1. Study the first section of the lesson.  

Remember: You can study the lesson by watching the video, listening to the audio, or reading the manuscript.

2. Use Study Guide 1.1 to assimilate the teaching. Use the outline for taking notes, answer the review questions, and answer the application questions.   

3. Take Quiz 1.1.

SECTION 2

1. Study section 2 of the lesson, using Study Guide 1.2. 

2. Take Quiz 1.2.

SECTION 3

1. Study section 3 of the lesson, using Study Guide 1.3.

2. Take Quiz 1.3. 

REVIEW

1. Review all the study guides of the lesson, preparing for the test on the whole lesson. 

2. Take the Cumulative Test.

OTHER REQUIRED ACTIVITIES

1. Complete the Questionnaire.

2. Begin the required reading assignments (See the section "Required Reading.")
