Supplementary Lesson 3: Recent Errors Regarding the Second Coming

Just like among the Thessalonians, there have been repeated errors regarding the second coming of Christ throughout history. More recently, there have been two important movements that began with such a misunderstanding.

1. William Miller, a Baptist preacher, predicted that Christ would return some time in 1843 or 1844. After being disappointed and changing the date, he became especially convinced that this would happen on October 22, 1844. Thousands of people believed him, sold their possessions, and climbed to the highest place they could find to wait for Christ on that day, dressed in white robes. But nothing happened. This has been called the "Great Disappointment."

Miller admitted his error once again, but made another prediction for six months later. Again, nothing happened. Many of his followers abandoned him.

However, other followers of Miller stayed with him and later formed the Seventh Day Adventist Church. While they still believed in the second coming, they no longer specified a particular date.
