BUILDING BIBLICAL THEOLOGY
INSTRUCTIONS FOR LESSON 2: SYNCHRONIC SYNTHESIS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT


Preparation

Before starting the lesson, you should access the lecture for this lesson, either in the form of video, audio file, or manuscript.  You should have already downloaded the study guides for the whole course.


The lesson is divided into the following sections:

Goals and Objectives

GOALS

In this lesson, we would like to accomplish the following:

1. We hope you will make use of all the resources and activities of the lesson to understand the meaning, importance, and proper use of synchronic synthesis in Biblical Theology.

2. We hope you make some changes in your life as a response to the teachings of this lesson. It should change the way you interpret the Old Testament, using the approach of synchronic synthesis.

OBJECTIVES

When you have done the following, it will show that the goals are met:

1. Obtain satisfactory grades on the tests, demonstrating that you can identify: a) the meaning and importance of synchronic synthesis, b) the meaning of "that world" and "their world" as seen by Old Testament writers, c) literary conventions used in Old Testament poetry, d) norms regarding comprehensiveness, precision, and objectivity that were followed by Old Testament authors as they narrated history, e) various sources from which we can discern theological structures, and f) examples of different levels of synthetic theological structures that can be discerned as we study a period of Old Testament history.

2. Answer the application questions in the study guides, showing that you can use the approach of synchronic synthesis to study the Old Testament.

2. Use Study Guide 2.1 to assimilate the teaching. Use the outline for taking notes, answer the review questions, and answer the application questions.   

3. Take Quiz 2.1.

SECTION 2

1. Study section 2 of the lesson, using Study Guide 2.2. 

2. Take Quiz 2.2.

SECTION 3

1. Study section 3 of the lesson, using Study Guide 2.3.

2. Take Quiz 2.3. 

REVIEW

1. Review all the study guides of the lesson, preparing for the test on the whole lesson. 

2. Take the Cumulative Test.
