Percentage of the literature in Acts that is narrative discourse.

A

Abraham

Old Testament patriarch. Luke taught in Acts that Jesus was the heir to the promises made to him.

Ananias

Man who, along with his wife Sapphira, lied about the amount of money they had received from the sale of their property when they made a contribution. Both were struck dead as punishment (Acts 5). 

Anti-Marcionite

Name of an ancient prologue to the third gospel. It says, "Luke, moved by the Holy Spirit, composed the whole of this Gospel...and afterwards the same Luke wrote the Acts of the Apostles."

Apocalyptic

Name given to Jewish groups from the first century who believed that God would intervene supernaturally to destroy their enemies

Apollos

Eloquent Jewish speaker who received instruction in Ephesus from a couple who knew more about Christ, because he only knew of the baptism of John the Baptist

Argumentative

Term used by Dr. Bayer to describe discourse that makes a point more directly

C

Clement

Early church writer from Alexandria, 150-215, who stated explicitly that Luke is the author of Acts

Cornelius

Captain of the Roman army from Cesarea who was converted through the ministry of Peter (Acts 10-11)

D

David

Old Testament king. Luke taught that Jesus was the final king in his dynasty.

E

Elymas

Magician from Cyprus who was miraculously made blind, which convinced the proconsul to believe the gospel (Acts 13)

Episodic

Term used by Dr. Bayer to describe Luke's writing in Acts. It means that it is a successive selection of smaller accounts.

Eusebius

Early church historian, who wrote around AD 323 that Luke was the author of Acts

Josephus

Jewish historian from the first century. Wrote Antiquities.

L

Luke

Author of the third gospel and the Book of Acts

M

Moses

Old Testament prophet and deliverer. Luke taught that Jesus was a prophet like him.

Muratorian

Name of fragment, earliest known document listing the New Testament books that the Church considered canonical

N

Narrative

Term used by Dr. Bayer to describe discourse that makes a point more indirectly by telling a story

Nero

Roman emperor who blamed the Christians for a fire in 64 A.D.

P

Papyrus 75

Early manuscript containing portions of Luke and John, probably copied between AD 175 and AD 200

Pharisees

Jewish sect from the first century. Along with the Sadducees, they believed that God would not intervene until Israel becomes obedient to the law.

Philip

Name of deacon from the church in Jerusalem (Acts 6) who preached the gospel in Samaria (Acts 8). (The name coincides with the name of one of the 12 apostles, but this is a different person.)

Priscilla

Woman, who along with her husband Aquila, gave instruction to Apollos in Ephesus

R

Rome

City where Paul was imprisoned in a house for two years. While he was there, he was free to preach the gospel boldly and without hindrance.

S

Simon

Magician from Samaria who tried to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit

T

Theophilus

Person to whom Luke addressed his gospel and the Book of Acts

Z

Zealots

Jewish sect from the first century. They believed that the Day of Messiah would be ushered in by mounting insurrection against the roman authorities.
