INSTRUCTIONS FOR LESSON 4: THE CANON OF THE OLD TESTAMENT


Preparation

Access the lecture for this lesson, either in the form of video, audio file, or manuscript. You should have already downloaded the study guides for the whole course.

Goals and Objectives

GOALS

In this lesson, we would like to accomplish the following:

1. We hope you will make use of all the resources and activities of the lesson to learn the basic principles of how to apply the teachings of the Old Testament today.

2. We hope you will sense the importance of applying the teachings of the Old Testament to your life and situation today.

3. We hope you make some changes in your life as a response to the teachings of this lesson. It should help you interpret and apply the Old Testament.

OBJECTIVES

When you have done the following, it will show that the goals are met:

1. Obtain satisfactory grades on the tests, demonstrating that you can identify the three types of interests that a thematic analysis of the Bible addresses, the benefits of historical analysis, the meaning of the “synchronic snapshot” and the “diachronic trace,” the different literary forms in the Old Testament and how the New Testament uses and interprets them, dangers that sometimes accompany literary analysis, and how the books of the Old Testament employ the theme of the kingdom of God.

2. Answer the application questions in the study guides, expressing your attitude regarding the application of the Old Testament today, and showing that you can interpret and apply passages from the Old Testament correctly.

2. Use Study Guide 4.1 to assimilate the teaching. Use the outline for taking notes, answer the review questions, and answer the application questions.

1. Study section 2 of the lesson, using Study Guide 4.2.

1. Study section 3 of the lesson, using Study Guide 4.3.

REVIEW

1. Review all the study guides of the lesson, preparing for the test on the whole lesson. 

2. Take the Cumulative Test.
