Introduction

Ethics has always been a subject of great interest among philosophers. In this mini-lesson, we will introduce a few key views that have been presented by important thinkers throughout the centuries, in terms that secular philosophers use. The categories tend to blur and overlap, but there are clear tendencies that can be identified. We will briefly describe the fundamental proposition of each, and show how they are in contrast with the Christian position, as presented in the lesson by Dr. Frame.

We will look at the following three main categories :

Virtue Ethics: This view focuses on the character of the agent himself. It has some similarities with the "existential" aspect that Dr. Frame describes. 

Consequentialism: This view focuses on the outcome of the action in society. It has similarities with the "situational" aspect that Dr. Frame describes.

Deontology: This view focuses on the correctness of the act itself and the principle it follows. It has some similarities with the "normative" aspect that Dr. Frame describes.
