A

Abel

Son of Adam and Eve murdered by his brother

Ark

Word used for the boat that Noah built, also used for the basket in which Moses was placed as a baby

Atrahasis Epic

An ancient Babylonian story of the Flood that includes the creation, corruption, the flood, and a new order

B

Babel

Name of tower built to reach to the heavens. Name means "gate of God" in Mesopotamian language.

Balal

Word in Hebrew that means "confused." Used by Moses to describe the confusion of languages after God cursed the people for building the Tower of Babel.


C

Cain

Son of Adam and Eve who murdered his brother

Canaan

Son of Ham who was cursed. He was told that his descendants would serve the descendants of Shem and Japheth.

Consummation

Term used to describe the third and final stage of redemption

Continuation

Term used to describe the second or middle stage of redemption

E

Eden

In the Hebrew language, it means a delightful place.

Edin

In the Babylonian language, it means plain or flatland.

Enoch

Name given both to a son of Cain and to a descendant of Seth. The son of Cain was a murderer and the descendant of Seth "walked with God."

Enuma Elish

An ancient Babylonian story about the creation

Euphrates

Fourth of the four headwaters flowing out of the river from the Garden of Eden

Fertile Crescent

Region between Egypt and Mesopotamia, bordered by the desert on the south and the mountains on the north

G

Gihon

Second of the four headwaters flowing out of the river from the Garden of Eden. It went through the entire land of Cush.

Gilgamish Epic

An ancient Babylonian story of the Flood

Ham

Son of Noah that dishonored him when he was drunk. His son Canaan was cursed. His descendants migrated to the areas of northern Africa and Canaan.

Inauguration

Term used to describe the first stage of redemption

J

Jabal

Son of Lamech, father of those who lived in tents and raised livestock

Japheth

Son of Noah. One of the two that showed respect to Noah. He was told that he would be blessed as he lived in the tents of Shem, and that Canaan would serve him also. His descendants migrated to the areas north of Canaan.

Jubal

Son of Lamech, father of all who played the harp and the flute.

L

Lamech

Evil descendant of Cain who boasted of killing a young man who had wounded him and claimed that God would avenge him 77 times.

Menorah

The seven pronged lamp that was in the Tabernacle

Mesopotamia

The region of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers

N

Nephilim

Strong warriors known for their violence and exploitation. They appear in Genesis 6, and again in Numbers 13, when Israel sent spies to explore Canaan.

P

Pishon

Name of the first of the four headwaters flowing out of the river from the Garden of Eden. It went through the land of Havilah, where there was gold and onyx.

Prototype

The original form of something that serves as an example for other similar things

Shem

Son of Noah, descendant of Seth, father of the Israelites. He was told that Canaan, son of Ham, would serve him. His descendants migrated to the areas of the Arabian peninsula.

Tabernacle

Movable tent in which the Ark of the Covenant was kept and in which God showed His special presence to Israel

Tigris

Third of the four headwaters flowing out of the river from the Garden of Eden. It ran along the east side of Asshur.


Tubal-Cain

Son of Lamech, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron

Y

Yahweh

Name of God used at the time of Seth, which became prominent in the time of Moses
