Lo-Ammi

The name of Hosea's third child, a son. It means "not my people." This name revealed that, for a period of time, God would treat Israel as if it were a Gentile nation under his wrath.


Lo-Ruhamah

The name of Hosea's second child, a daughter. It may be translated "not loved," or "no mercy." This name indicated that God was going to stop showing love and mercy to the kingdom of Israel.

Samaria

Capital city of the northern tribes of Israel


Sargon II

Assyrian king who brought about the complete destruction of Samaria and drove most of the population of Israel into exile


Shophar

A hollowed ram's horn used in ancient Israel to call the armies into battle


T

Tiglath-Pileser III

In 744 B.C., he became emperor in Assyria, leading to a rise in their power and an increase in their threat to Israel and Judah. In 732, he invaded Israel. (This was not their final destruction of Israel).
