The year (B.C.) of the Assyrian invasion of Israel that led to the fall of Samaria and to the exile of most of the population of Israel

Assyria

Powerful empire to the north of Israel that conquered them during the time of Hosea

Gomer

God commanded Hosea to marry this woman who practiced worship prostitution.

Hezekiah

After a period of co-regency with his father, he was the sole regent of Judah from around 715 B.C. to 686 B.C. Early on, he continued his father's alliance with Assyria and its gods. He soon broke with Assyria, but relied on the strength of his army, his fortified cities and an alliance with Egypt for protection against Assyria, rather than trusting in the Lord.


Hoshea

The king that Assyria placed on Israel's throne. He promoted idolatry and injustice, and turned to Egypt and their gods for protection. (Not to be confused with the name of the prophet with a slightly different spelling!)

Israel

Name used to refer to the northern tribes of the Jewish nation after the division

Jeroboam

King over Israel when Hosea began his prophetic ministry


Judah

Name used to refer to the southern tribes of the Jewish nation after the division

Sargon II

Assyrian king who brought about the complete destruction of Samaria and drove most of the population of Israel into exile


Shophar

A hollowed ram's horn used in ancient Israel to call the armies into battle
